During the microorganisms unit, we did not have enough time to do a couple of labs. One was The Spice of Life. We did this today. Students were given an agar plate with bacteria. Half of the plate was covered with spice. The purpose is to determine which spices affect bacteria.
Students completed two sound labs - Straw Sounds and Sound Sandwich (click here for more information).
Students made a “kazoo” out of a straw. This demonstrated sound and vibrations. Next, they blew on their straw “kazoo” and cut off part of the straw. This demonstrated pitch – as the straw got shorter, the pitch got higher.
For sound sandwich, students used two large craft sticks, a thick rubber band, two small pieces of a straw, and two small rubber band. Click here for more information about the sound sandwich.

Students completed three sound labs. The first was Plucker Up. Students placed a string tied onto a paperclip into a cup. They put the cup up to their ear and plucked the string. They changed the length of the string with their fingers. This demonstrated pitch.
The second was King Gong. Students tied a string to two cups. A hanger was hung on the string. A group member tapped the hanger and they heard sound through the two cups. This demonstrated vibrations and sound.
The third was Party Line. Students connected two cup together, pulled them tight, and talked to each other. The third person in the group tied a third cup, pulled all three tight, and talked to each other. The fourth person in the group tied a fourth cup, pulled all four tight, and talked to each other.
