Tuesday, March 31st

Students completed two word searches today – Disease Caused by Microbes Word Search and Scientists Word Search.
Honors Science – Students watched The Universe - Mysteries of the Moon.

Monday, March 30th

Students completed the Microorganisms Timeline assignment.  The assignment consisted of making a timeline showing when and what scientists did to help us better understand microorganisms.
Honors Science – We reviewed phases of the Moon.  Students completed Phases of the Moon worksheets V and VI.


3/27/15

Friday, March 27th

Students took a microorganisms quiz today.  After the quiz, they presented the Disease Wanted Poster.
Honors Science – Students worked on three worksheets; Phases of the Moon Worksheet II, Phases of the Moon Worksheet III, and Phases of the Moon Worksheet IV.  We began watching Bill Nye - The Moon.

Thursday, March 26th

Students worked on a microorganisms worksheet - What's My Diagnosis Students were given symptoms of seven diseases and, using a classification key, they identified the disease.  The next assignment was the Disease Wanted Poster. Each student was assigned a disease and they made the wanted poster based on that disease.  They will present their disease tomorrow.
Honors Science – Students watched The Universe - The Day the Moon Was Gone.

Wednesday, March 25th

Students watched and episode of Good Eats – The American Pickle.  Students worked on a microorganisms worksheet - Perils at the PicnicThey read about a picnic and identified how the food was handled improperly.
Honors Science – We began the phases of the moon unit today.  Students listened to the lecture and students took notes during the lecture.  They completed a phases of the moon worksheet - Identifying Phases of the Moon I.

Tuesday, March 24th

We identified foods and diseases (Foods and Diseases) and identified which microbe was used to make certain foods and caused certain diseases.  Students completed graphic organizers during the lecture (identifying which microbes were used in food production, identifying which microbe was responsible for which disease, identify the three ways disease is transferred, three ways to prevent the transfer of disease, and identified key scientists responsible for helping us learn about microbes).
Honors Science – Students completed the size and scale unit assessment.  Before the assessment, there was a review lecture.

Monday, March 23rd

Students completed a microorganisms lab - A Yeastly FeastStudents were given eleven different “foods” for the yeast.  They filled a small cup with yeast and the food and observed it for twenty minutes, determining which “foods” the yeast would eat.
Honors Science – Students finished the size and scale activity - Scale Model of the Planets. They began the activity last Friday.

Friday, March 20th

It was my intention that students watch the program Food Tech – Pizza.  Unfortunately, during the first three classes the streaming video eventually stopped and could not connect to the appropriate server.  I finally gave and students watched MythBusters - Mega Movie Myths.
Honors Science – Students began a size and scale Activity - Scale Model of the PlanetsUsing rolls of paper, students made scale model of the gas giants and make models of the rocky worlds using construction paper.  All planets are glued on to Jupiter to compare size.

Thursday, March 19th

Students took the protist unit assessment.  They then completed a microorganisms lab - How Does Temperature Affect Yeast?  They observed how yeast grew in water with two temperatures, one warm and the other cold.
Honors Science – All 6th grade students completed the SHARP Survey during 3rd Hour.


3/18/15

Wednesday, March 18th

Students conducted a microorganisms lab - How Sugar Affects the Growth of Yeast. Students placed yeast and sugar in one flask and one flask with just yeast. They observed it for ten minutes and recorded their observations. Using that information, they analyzed their data and arrived at a conclusion.
Honors Science – Students finished the Size and Scale activity - Solar System Beads. They completed a worksheet, Know Your Galactic AddressGoing through seven steps, they arrive at a complete address beginning with their name and ending with the galactic supercluster.

Tuesday, March 17th

Students finished the Section 2.4 Diversity of Living Things (Fungi) worksheet.  They watched a DVD about fungi.
Honors Science – Students took a size and scale quiz.  They made a scale model of the Solar System using beads (Solar System Beads).

Monday, March 16th

Students read section 2.4 in Diversity of Living Things (Fungi) and completed a worksheet.
Honors Science – Students completed a size and scale activity - Solar System on a MapUsing a map of Northern Utah, students identified where each planet would be located if Brigham City were the Sun.

There was a substitute today.  Students were show 95 Worlds and Counting as a review for our end of year SAGE test.

Thursday, March 12th

Students finished making their protists graphic organizers.
Honors Science – Students finished and presented the How Big, How Far, How Old (cards) assignment.

Tuesday, March 10th

Student finished the Protist Worksheet began yesterday.
Honors Science – Students completed a size and scale of the Solar System activity - Earth/Moon ModelUsing a dodge ball and the formulas on the worksheet, students made a scale model of the Moon and cut a string that represented the scale distance between the Earth and Moon.

Monday, March 9th

Students completed a Bacteria Review Worksheet.  Then, students completed the microorganisms - bacteria assessment. They began working on a Protist Worksheet. The worksheets dealt with the amoeba, Euglena, and paramecium.
Honors Science – Students watched three size and scale DVDs – Stars and Galaxies, Stars, Light Years and the Milky Way, and Bill Nye - Outer Space.

Wednesday, March 4th
Students finished reading the text, Diversity of Living Things Section 1.2 and completed a worksheet. They read Diversity of Living Things Section 1.4.
Honors Science – We finished the Size and Scale lecture. Students worked on a size and scale worksheet - Interstellar Trip PlannerStudents were given a destination and had to determine how long it would take to arrive there at different speeds.

Thursday, March 5th
Students finished reading the text, Diversity of Living Things Section 1.4 and completed a worksheet. They completed a graphic organizer while listening to an introduction to protists PowerPoint.
Honors Science Students completed a size and scale worksheet, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away (maps). They determined scale distances to the planets and Alpha Centauri.

Tuesday, March 3rd

Students reviewed how to read a textbook using headings and other cues in the text.  They read Diversity of Living Things Section 1.1 and completed a worksheet.
Honors Science – Students took the constellations unit assessment. We began the Size and Scale unit lecture.

Monday, March 2nd

Students took a two-part microorganisms vocabulary quiz. Students read an article, Bacteria - It's What's for Breakfast and completed a worksheet.
Honors Science – Students listened to a podcast, Listened to Can Constellations Break Apart and completed a worksheet
