Wednesday, February 26th

We have been talking about beneficial uses of microorganisms.  Today, we talked about how we are harmed by microorganisms, specifically those that cause diseases.  Students were given a disease to research and make a
Disease Wanted Poster.  Each student presented information about their disease to the class.
Honor's Science – We finally had a sunny day today.  Students completed a seasons lab - Why is Summer Hot?  Students had two thermometers, one at an angle and one flat on the ground.  They measured temperatures for thirty minutes.  What they found was the thermometer at the angle had the highest temperature because it was receiving direct sunlight.  The thermometer flat on the ground had the lowest temperature because it received indirect sunlight.

Thursday, February 20th

Students worked on three microorganisms worksheets that dealt with the characteristics of bacteria, fungi, and protists (Bacteria, Fungi, and Protist Characteristics).
Honors Science – Students worked on identifying geological features on Mars with the Imaging Mars activity.

Thursday, February 13th

We began our microorganisms unit today.  Students did an introductory worksheet, On Your Marks, Get Set, Go!   They learned what it means when we talk about living things.   After students completed the reading and worksheet, we began watching Discovery School - Understanding Bacteria.
Honors Science – We finished watching When We Left Earth - Landing the Eagle and began watching When We Left Earth – The Explorers.

Tuesday, February 11th

We spent today reviewing for the seasons test.  We played three “games” - Seasons JeopardyThe Happy Game, and What is the Truth.  In the Happy Game, students are given a picture or a question.  They have two choices of correct answers.  What is Truth gives students two statements, one true and one false.  Students determine which statement is true
Honor's Science – Students continued working on the Blue Marble Matches activity.  Having completed looking at Earth photos, students are now looking at features on other planets and determining what geological force formed the features they see.

Thursday, February 6th

Earlier in the week, students took a seasons review quiz.  The scores weren’t quite as high as I had hoped.  Today we began reviewing the concepts.  Students made four graphic organizer foldables.  One foldable was a four-door shutter book identifying the position of the Earth and Sun during each season.  The second was a layered book that showed the difference between direct and indirect sunlight.  The third was a layered book that showed the position of the Earth and Sun during each season.  The fourth was two six-tab books.  Each tab represented a month and under the tab, students wrote the number of daylight hours during that month.  For more information,  click here.
Honor's Science – Half the class was attending a guest speaker in Mrs. Baugh’s classroom.  Because of that, students watched an episode of MythBusters.

Monday & Tuesday February 3rd & 4th

Students completed two seasons labs the last two days.
Why Is Summer HotUsing two thermometers, students place one at a 45-degree angle and a 0-degree angle.  Light is shined on them for thirty minutes and students compare temperatures.  The 45-degree thermometer will be hotter because it is getting direct heat energy.
Catching Some RaysStudents place four thermometers at different angles (0, 30, 60, 90).  Light is shined on them and temperatures are compared.
Honors Science
Monday students completed Blue Marble Matches, Part II.  Students are learning how to analyze satellite photos.

Friday, January 31st

Students took a quiz over what we’ve discussed about the reason for the seasons.  I was impressed with the results.   They showed they have a good basic understanding of the principles we discussed.
I was hoping to do a series of experiments dealing with direct and indirect sunlight, but they have to be done outside.  Unfortunately, it was too cloudy to do them.  So, instead, students watched MythBusters - YouTube Challenge. I’m hoping that the weather is more cooperative next week!
Honors Science.  Students completed a Mars Activity, Blue Marble Matches, Part IStudents are starting to learn how to recognize geological features from satellite photographs.
