Honor's Science Class – Continued working on the children's book assignment.

10/26/12

Friday, October 26th

We finished the size and scale activity - Scale Model Planets.  We began How Big? How Far? How Old? (Cards).  Students are given a set of cards and they have to determine the largest to the smallest, the closest to the farthest, and the youngest to the oldest.  We completed the activity through the “How Big” section of the activity.
Honor's Science Class – Student continued writing their children's book assignment.

10/25/12

Thursday, October 25th

Students began working on a size and scale activity - Scale Model Planets. Students made scale models of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.  The Jupiter model was a half-circle 66” in diameter.  The Saturn half-circle was 56” in diameter.  Uranus was a full circle 24” in diameter and Neptune was a full circle 22” in diameter. The Saturn half-circle was glued on top of the Jupiter half-circle.  Uranus and Neptune were both glued on top of the Jupiter/Saturn half-circles.  Tomorrow we’ll finish making the model with the four inner planets.
Honor's Science Class – Students continued working on the children's book assignment.

10/24/12

Wednesday, October 24th

We finished watching the Cosmic Voyage video and completed the worksheet.  Students completed a size and scale of Solar System activity - Solar System by Half.  Students get a six-foot strip of adding machine tape.  The place a Sun sticker on one end and a Pluto sticker on the other.  It is folded in half and Uranus is placed in the middle.  It is folded in half again from the Pluto end of the strip to Uranus.  Neptune is placed in the middle between Uranus and Pluto.  This process is continued on the opposite side (Sun side), folding in half each step and placing the planet on the fold.  This gives students a scale model of the Solar System.
Honor's Science Class – Continue working on the children's book assignment.

10/23/12

Tuesday, October 23rd

Today, we completed the Size and Scale lecture. After the lecture, we began watching the Cosmic Voyage video and students worked on a worksheet.

10/16/12

Tuesday, October 16th

Yesterday we finished the Solar System Unit and the re-take/make-up tests.  Our next unit is the Size and Scale of the Solar System/Universe.  I decided not to start this unit today because of fall break.  We will begin the unit on Monday, October 22nd.

10/15/12

Monday, October 15th

Today we reviewed the Solar System Planets unit.  After we reviewed, students took the Planets re-take test.
Honor's Science Class – Today was the last day in the computer lab.  Students finished their research for the children's book assignment.

10/12/12

Friday, October 12th

Today we reviewed the Solar System & Gravity section of the Solar System final assessment.  After the review, students took the Solar System & Gravity re-take test.
Honor's Science Class – Students continued researching information in the computer lab for children's book assignment.

10/11/12

Thursday, October 10th

We began the remediation/test retake for the asteroids, comets, and meteors unit.  I was pleased with the results.  With the exception of two students, all students who had a 2 proficiency on the test increased their proficiency on the test.  We will continue remediation/test retake tomorrow.
Honor's Science Class – Students received their Solar System children's book assignment.  The day was spent in the computer lab researching information for their book.

10/10/12

Wednesday, October 10th

Today students finished watching Bill Nye – Outer Space and completed the worksheet.  They watched Galaxies and the Expanding Universe.  This video took them on a tour through the universe.
Honor's Science Class – Students finished watching the Solar System videos and worksheets.  The rest of the hour, students worked to complete the remaining Solar System assignments (Solar System Trading Cards & Solar System Cinquain).

10/9/12

Tuesday, October 9th

Students watched videos that introduced the concepts in our next unit, size and scale of the Solar System and universe.  Our Place in Space explained the location of Earth in the Milky Way galaxy and the Milky Way galaxy in the universe.  Bill Nye - Outer Space gave students an overview of the universe.
Honor's Science Class – Students watched How the Solar System Works.  This video explains the structure of the Solar System (Sun, planets, comets, asteroids, etc.) as well as the role gravity plays in the Solar System.  They next watched Our Rocky Neighbors - The Inner Planets.  The video reviewed properties and characteristics of each of the rocky planets.  The Gas Giants - The Outer Planets reviewed properties and characteristics of each of the outer gas giants.
